Good branding is quite simply, truth.
In the world of branding, there are tons of elements that work together to create a company’s unique identity, one that embodies the essence of what your company stands for and that’s conveyed both verbally and visually. So what are the elements that add up to a brand? A brand strategy, naming, story, logo, manifesto, tagline, visual identity, yada, yada, yada....
Your brand foundation needs to be based on truth though. (Not everyone delivers that. A lot of agencies say it, preach it, but between us - - do your homework. Please.)
Out of that truth, a communication or brand strategy is delivered that incorporates your company’s vision, goals, personality, and reason for being. Through a disciplined (and many times emotional) deep dive into these aspects of your company, a solid brand strategy will emerge, providing its foundation - a position, story and other carious verbal articulations.
It also needs a visual identity that reflects the strategy and story. A logo is the most stand-out example. (Duh). And there should be an idea behind it that answers all the work done until that point. Once designed, it'll appear on all your brand assets so it has to be world-class. From start to finish, the creation or evolution of a brand requires honest critical thinking about a company’s true essence (a fancy way of saying 'be real') and the ability to express that through thoughtful communication and design.
